Top 10 Must Attend Fotoweek Events

Fotoweek is officially here! Haven’t decided what you’re going to do yet? Going through the Fotoweek exhibits and events calendar can be a daunting task.  It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the exhibits and openings and lectures and presentations….face it: there’s a lot going on!

And, we are here to help.  Your blog writers have been busy sorting through all the information so you don’t have to! 

Below is our Top 10 picks of Must-Attend Fotoweek Events, based on what we can’t wait to check out for ourselves!

1)  Fotoweek Gala.  This, folks, is a no brainer.  Buy your ticket to THE photographic shmoozefest of the year.  Don’t miss your chance to mingle and mix with fellow artists, gallerists, curators, and collectors.  Refresh your networking skills, wear your party clothes, and ready yourself for a fantastic evening out!

2)  Lecture & Presentation: “A Life In Photography” by Joyce Tenneson. Friday, 7 to 9 p.m., Metropolitan Center for the Visual Arts (VisArts). 

3)  Curator & Artists Panel Discussion: Washington Project for the Arts Presents:  “Known Unknowns”, curated by Amanda Maddox, Assistant Curator of Photography, Corcoran Gallery of Art. Wednesday, 6 to 8 p.m., IA&A Hillyer Art Space

4)  Portfolio Reviews: Conversation & Critique. Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Multiple Exposures Gallery.

5)  Book Signing: “Serenissima: Venice In Winter” by Frank Van Riper and Judith Goodman. Wednesday, 6:30pm, Embassy of Italy

6) Critical Exposure’s Picture Equality: An Evening of Empowerment through Photography, the first annual reception and silent auction to benefit Critical Exposure’s efforts to introduce inner-city students to photography. The auction will consist of images donated by professional photographers, including Steve McCurry, Joyce Tenneson, Michael Weintrob, and photographers from National Geographic and Magnum Photos. Critical Exposure students’ photos will also be on display. Wednesday, 6:30 p.m., L2 Lounge. $75 per person.

7) You should certainly take some time to check out one of the projection shows around the city for NightGallery DC

8 ) Print geeks should not only see what’s going on at our Tech Pavilion, but also head to Penn Camera in Laurel to test drive one of the Epson 4800 series printers with your own digital files. Thursday, 2 to 5 p.m.

9) Panel discussion with six Iranian photographers through ARTBRIDGE. Monday at the Corcoran Hammer Auditorium, 3:30 to 5 p.m.

10) Lunchtime lectures at Discovery Communications Headquarters in Silver Spring. Monday through Friday at 12 p.m., photographers and photo industry leaders will speak for one hour and show their work in their HD theater. Even better? They’re free and lunch is provided. Space is limited to 100 so be sure to RSVP.
