DESCRIPTION:

Imagine a fully operational movie palace created over the course of more than forty years by an outsider artist who worked as a projectionist.   Hidden from view in the basement of its creator until 2007, The Shalimar Theatre and the remarkable story of Gordon Brinckle, the man who built it, is at the heart of The Projectionist. Kendall Messick will discuss his latest film and exhibition currently on view at Hemphill Fine Arts.

"Kendall Messick (b.1965) is an artist who constructs installations of still photography, film, video and an ever-evolving assemblage of two and three-dimensional media to capture stories that would otherwise go unheard. From the recollections of elderly townspeople in a crossroads community in rural North Carolina (Corapeake), to a man who has dedicated his life to pursuing his dream of owning a movie palace in the most unconventional way (The Projectionist), Messick is often drawn to the stories of aging individuals typically overlooked today.

About Kendall Messick
Having studied at the International Center of Photography and the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Messick was the still photographer and co-creator for the acclaimed documentary video There is No Such Word as Can’t (1998).  During the winter of 1999 he worked in Eastern Europe as the associate producer and still photographer for Here and Now a documentary film on the Gypsies of Bulgaria. Corapeake was Messick’s first documentary film as director and was completed in 2001. After winning film festival awards, Corapeake was a featured broadcast on several PBS affiliates throughout the country. The film was then named a United States pre-selection finalist for INPUT 2003, which showcases the best of public television programming from around the world. In 2002, Messick premiered the Corapeake exhibition consisting of his still photography, related artifacts and the documentary film. The Corapeake exhibition is currently scheduled to travel to galleries and museums through 2009. The Projectionist is Messick’s second film and exhibition, which was launched in 2007.  This project has already garnered both critical and curatorial acclaim and is also currently scheduled to travel to institutions through 2009. Messick’s current work in progress is Impermanence. A devastating fire that ravaged his home and studio in 2006 has inspired this project. Messick's photographs are in numerous public and private collections including the Smithsonian Institution and the Museum of Modern Art. In addition to his fine art projects, he works on a freelance basis with editorial and advertising clientele.

DESCRIPTION:

Integrating another useful tool into image making, Irene will show images that involve chasing down imagery by kayak, turning her camera on a particular dimension of the natural world and shooting a sport she loves.

About Irene Owsley
Travel, the great outdoors, and photography are the continuous threads that are woven through Irene’s personal and professional life.  By the time she graduated from Smith College with a BA in Religion and South Asian Studies, she had lived in five countries and crossed the ocean multiple times.  After four years in the Colorado mountains, where she took up photography in earnest, she continued to develop her visual aesthetic with a career in museums, eventually landing in Washington DC to work for the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.   Gradually Irene’s career as a photographer predominated, and her work has ranged from travel articles (as author and photographer) for The Boston Globe and The Washington Post, to adventures “off the beaten path” where exploration is as much a state of mind as a location.  Recently she has specialized in shooting the wild areas of metropolitan Washington, DC, particularly along the Potomac River and in the shadows of the national monuments.  Irene is also drawn to explore northern extremes – Iceland, Greenland, Alaska and Arctic Canada – a passion that has expanded her library of stock images for publication.  While stationary in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, she shoots portraits and events and is currently working on large panorama fine art prints.

FotoWeek DC Presents: Contact/s: The Art of Photojournalism

DATE:

11/15/2008 - 11/22/2008

WHERE: FotoWeek Central

Washington, DC 20007

DESCRIPTION:

Contact/s: The Art of Photojournalism presents a selection of twenty-five contact sheets made since 1976 by the photographers of Contact Press Images.  Structural forerunner to both the photo essay and the television news segment that succeeded it, contact sheets are more than an editor’s tool or a presentation of sequential frames. They are in fact a cinema, a story. Providing a behind-the-scenes glimpse of unfolding events and a record of the photographer’s mental process, some record a wandering eye; others an eye “zeroing in.” Some are fluid in narrative, others—owing to the photographer’s alternating use of several cameras—disjointed. Most are black and white, some color. But whether shot in 35mm, in medium or panoramic format, all these contacts offer an increasingly rare commodity: unvarnished, unmanipulated, and unrepeatable truth.

Meant to inform viewers about the history of the last three decades, this exhibit also showcases single images: one per contact sheet, plus an additional number of equally “iconic” images by photographers affiliated to the agency during its 33-year history.

Previously toured in China, Bangladesh, Australia, France and Belgium, this will be Contact/s first showing in the U. S.

Washington’s international community celebrates the art of photography and joins FotoWeek DC, voicing a strong presence and impact to the world’s visual arts and communications.

More than twenty countries are participating in FotoWeekDC, either by hosting exhibitions on their premises or by presenting their artists at the “International Photographers” exhibit (3333 M Street NW).

The “International Photographers” exhibition, coordinated and designed by Dr. Zoe Kosmidou, international exhibitions curator and Cultural Counselor, Embassy of Greece, showcases artistic photography from 15 countries with a diversity of themes and a chronological span since the beginning of photography.  Starting with the 19th and 20th centuries’ significant masters of photography, Eugene Courret and Manuel Alvarez Bravo to contemporary photographers, the exhibition unfolds a wide range of locality.  From Belize to Cyprus and from Estonia to Ukraine, the viewers will have the opportunity to travel through the lens of the talented participating artists such as Satomi Kato’s (Japan) "Forgotten Afghan Refugee Children in Pakistan" and Hans Stakelbeek’s (Netherlands) series “In Afghanistan”, documenting the reconstruction of Afghanistan.  The Russian-American collaborative is an example of cultural diplomacy through the art of photography, presented at the exhibit.
