FotoWeek DC Events

During this week-long celebration of photography in the nation’s capital, events will be organized to attract those who make a living practicing the art, science, business, education, and craft of photography as well as amateur photographers and the simply curious. FotoWeek DC will offer the entire Washington, D.C., community the opportunity to come together to focus on photography’s place in our world, to explore new ideas about the future of photography, and to experience photography’s many forms and enriching power.

Fotoweek Pre Kick-off 5-day Workshop with Bruce Barnbaum

DESCRIPTION: Internationally known photographer Bruce Barnbaum (www.barnbaum.com) will have participants view and discuss photography both from a technical and creative point of view. The workshop will include work indoors and outdoors, in the darkrooms and in the classroom to enhance seeing, technique, understanding, and creativity to better express you photographically. This is a rare opportunity for photographers on the East Coast to work with Bruce for a week without traveling a long distance.

Juried Exhibition

Go head to head with some of the Washington area’s finest shooters. A distinguished panel of judges will select from submitted images to mount a wide-ranging exhibition of the best photography, which will be displayed prominently. The call for entries will cover all aspects of photography (journalism, fine art, etc.) and will offer all photographers, from amateur to professional, a chance to mark the first year of FotoWeek DC by being part of this important inaugural exhibition. >>

Portfolio Reviews

This is a chance to get one-on-one feedback on your best work from giants in the field. Don’t miss this opportunity to sit down with some of the best in the business for serious, in-depth discussion of your work, your personal projects, your books in progress. Prominent shooters, and other experts from the fields of commercial and fine art photography, photojournalism, and documentary have agreed to review personal portfolios at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. These sessions are certain to be heavily booked so advance reservations are a must. >>

Mentoring: Consider a Profession around Photography

American Society of Picture Professionals DC/South Chapter presents "A View from the Inside -- How Photography and Art Careers are Changing and What You Need to Know to Succeed." Panel discussion at the National Press Club. More information to come.

Lectures at Lunch

An exciting series of lunchtime lectures to be held at the Discovery Communications headquarters during FotoWeek DC! Discovery Photo Services is proud to present a stunning lineup of photo industry leaders who will talk about the latest trends in photography and will show their award-winning work in Discovery's HD Theater in Silver Spring, MD. Just one hour each day on Monday through Friday. Noon to 1pm.

The Gala

A gala evening of festivity and celebration, to be held at the National Geographic Society, is the culminating event of FotoWeek DC. Photographers, both amateur and professional, whose work has been recognized by a distinguished panel of judges, will be toasted at a VIP reception and honored in an awards ceremony in the Society's Grosvenor Auditorium. Join your friends and colleagues for this special occasion!
